Understanding Industrial Water Hoses: What Are They?
Firstly, what are industrial water hoses, and how are they classified? A water hose is a flexible tube used for transporting water, encompassing both suction and discharge hoses or discharge hoses. For ease of understanding, we will refer to all as industrial water hoses. The industrial water hoses introduced in this lesson fall under the category of industrial hoses and exhibit the typical characteristics of such hoses. They consist of a standard three-layer structure: an inner layer, a reinforcement layer, and an outer layer. This product can be classified in various ways, depending on its application: suction and discharge, discharge, and washdown hoses.

1. Suction and Discharge Hose: An industrial water hose with a spiral wire and fabric reinforcement layer. It has a good bending radius and functions for both suction and discharge. Suction and discharge hoses are the most commonly used water hose products.
2. Discharge Hose: This type lacks the spiral wire found in suction and discharge hoses and can only transport water under positive pressure, not negative pressure. However, its advantage is that it can be easily coiled, with individual lengths reaching several hundred meters. As mentioned earlier, a fire hose is a common example of a discharge hose.
3. Washdown Hose: This type of hose is quite similar to multipurpose hoses and is a small-diameter extruded hose, typically with a size of no more than 1 inch. Through improvements and optimization of the rubber and reinforcement layer materials, washdown hoses can withstand high temperatures and pressures. They can be used to transport hot water or even steam.
According to the different materials used, the common materials include PVC, SBR, EPDM, and PE, which can be mainly classified into the following categories:

1. PVC Hose: This product offers good transparency, corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, lightweight, and low cost, but its downside is a limited temperature range, becoming stiff at low temperatures and softening at high temperatures. It is widely used in low-pressure, ambient-temperature environments.
2. SBR Hose: An entry-level water hose in the rubber industry, SBR material has a limited temperature range and average aging and ozone resistance but offers good value for money. Therefore, SBR hoses are widely used in agriculture or industrial applications with lower requirements.
3. EPDM Hose: With good value for money and a wide temperature range, it also has some corrosion resistance. This hose is widely used in high and low-temperature water transport situations. It is also sometimes used to transport low-corrosion,non-oily wastewater.
4. NBR Hose: NBR hoses are not particularly common, as NBR material does not compare well with EPDM hoses in terms of temperature and ozone resistance. This hose can effectively prevent grease in the operating environment from corroding the hose or can be used to transport oily wastewater.
5. PE Hose: This type of hose is usually used to transport drinking water. The inner layer of the hose uses food-grade PE material, such as UPE, effectively preventing the leaching of rubber materials and better protecting the safety of drinking water.

At this point, it is necessary to highlight the differences between drinking water hoses and ordinary water hoses.
The main difference between ordinary water hoses and drinking water hoses lies in their intended use and construction requirements:
Industrial Water Hose:
-Designed for general industrial and commercial water transfer applications, such as washdown, material handling, liquid transfer, etc.
-Made from durable materials, resistant to abrasion, chemicals, and harsh environments.
-The hose materials can be made from black or colored rubber, with no strict odor requirements.
Drinking Water Hose:
-Made from approved food-grade materials such as food-grade plastic PVC, PE, food rubber, etc.
-Must not impart any odor or leach harmful chemicals into the water being transported.
-The inner surface is smooth to prevent bacterial growth and odor.
-The hose typically needs to meet specific standards or certifications; for instance, drinking water hoses exported to the United States must comply with FDA and NSF standards.
Regarding the requirements for leachates from drinking water hoses, authoritative standards include NSF51 and NSF61 from the United States. In China, the requirements for drinking water hoses primarily reference the food contact materials standard GB4806, which combines water and food contact standards. At this point, some might wonder whether food-grade hoses can be used for water transport. My answer is: not necessarily. Some food-grade hoses, even if made from food-grade rubber and meeting various food-grade requirements, may release certain substances during drinking water transport that can make the water taste bitter or astringent, severely affecting its flavor. Therefore, many manufacturers have specific products for drinking water hoses. Moreover, selecting a food-grade hose with a plastic lining, such as food-grade PVC hoses,food-grade UPE chemical hoses, or higher-grade fluoropolymer hoses, as a drinking water hose, is relatively safer.
Finally, let's share some typical application scenarios for industrial water hoses:

1. Cooling Applications: For instance, cooling laser equipment,single-item furnaces,multi-item furnaces, and semiconductor server rooms. These are primarily used to transport deionized water or water-glycol mixtures. The most commonly used products are EPDM water hoses, although SBR hoses or more economical PVC hoses can also be used in ambient temperature conditions.

2. Agricultural Market: Typically used to transport irrigation water or water-containing slurry on farms.SBR water hoses are commonly used. In Less demanding applications, flat hose types, similar to fire hoses, are also widely adopted.

3. Food Processing Industry: Washdown hoses are widely used for cleaning floors and equipment. If used in greasy environments, such as slaughterhouses,oil-resistant NBR washdown hoses are required; in general food factories, EPDM washdown hoses offer better value for money.
